THE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The School of Technology came into existence in 1979.  There are Seven departments in the school namely:

  1. Department of Computer Science
  2. Department of Food Science and Technology
  3. Department of Hospitality and Management Technology
  4. Department of Leisure and Tourism
  5. Department of Mathematics and Statistics
  6. Department of Nutrition and Dietetics
  7. Department of Science Laboratory Technology

All the departments run both the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes which have been accredited by the National Board for Technical Education.  Furthermore the department of Hospitality and Management Technology runs Certificate courses.

The school has been headed at various times by the following:

The Department of Leisure and Tourism Management started in 2016 with.  Initially, the courses under leisure and tourism were in the former department of hospitality and tourism management. All the programmes in the department are accredited by National Board for Technical Education.  The department since 2006 has a Tourism Village that was built and commissioned for teaching and practical session for the students of the department

The Department run the following:

  2. Higher National Diploma Leisure and Tourism Management
  3. Diploma in Leisure and Tourism Management

The Department of Computer Science (formerly called Computer Centre) was established in September 1986 within the School of General Studies. On inception, the department was only a service department to other departments in computer related courses, presently the department is under the School of Science and Technology.

The Department runs a National Diploma and Certificate programme in Computer Science as well as short time courses on computer related fields of study.

It has staff strength of nineteen (19) academic staff, seven (7) non academic staff and a Youth Corps member.

Programmes

Apart from being a service department to all the departments of the Polytechnic, the department currently runs ND and HND programmes leading to the award of Higher National Diploma and National Diploma certificates.  These programmes are designed to produce middle level manpower computer professionals, capable of applying the use of computer in areas computing services and Information and Communication Technology.  The department also runs a certificate course in computer science and short computer appreciation programmes for non computer professionals.  These are designed to enable interested candidates to be acquainted with practical knowledge of some basic computing, basic hard ware maintenance, soft ware development and its application.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics started on 21st January, 2003 within the School of General Studies. Though a new department, it has fully satisfied the National Board for Technical Education – NBTE – requirements to run a National Diploma programme.

The Department is blessed with twelve (12) academic staff and two (2) non academic staff.  The following is the list of Heads of department since its inception:

Achievements 

The Department has achieved the following:-

1. Attainment of sponsorship to number of staff to Mathematical Centre Abuja for a National Seminar.

2.  Sponsored of a staff to a First Workshop for Capacity Building for Algebra and related courses.

3 . In 2011 the Department hosted the first National Mathematical Competition for Polytechnics (NAMPCPS) and all the participants from the Department qualified for the final round.

4 . A student of the department won a Bronze Medal during the final of NAMPCPCS at Abuja 2011.

The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management started in 1979 with thirty students.  Initially, the students were admitted into the Nigerian National Diploma (NND) programme.  The programme was later changed to a two-tier system comprising the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes.  The Higher National Diploma (HND) and Certificate course programmes were started in the year 1981/82.  All the programmes in the department are accredited by National Board for Technical Education.  The department has a Demonstration Hotel, new classroom and administrative blocks and other facilities.

The Department in 2009 changed its name from Hotel and Catering Management to Hospitality and Tourism Management to be in line with the approved new syllabus by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

The Department of Food Science and Technology is one of the departments established at the inception of the Polytechnic in September, 1979.  At inception, the department with a student enrolment of seventeen (17) who started a four year Nigerian National Diploma Programme (NND) in Food Technology.

After the change to the two-tier National Diploma (ND) and the Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in 1981, the department started graduating students yearly at both National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels.

In 1986, the department was merged with the department of Science Technology as the department of Food Science Technology.  However, in 1988, the two departments were separated hence the name Food Science and Technology.

The Department has laboratories and workshop as follows:

Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry and food Processing Workshop.  A Yoghurt Plant is near completion in the department.  In 2003 Nutrition and Dietetics programme was introduced at National Diploma level and Higher National Diploma in the year 2008.  The Nutrition and Dietetic Unit has Dietetic clinic, Dietetic kitchen, and Sensory evaluation room.  Overall the department has a total number of 25 highly experienced staff.  Since inception the department has graduated a total number of 233 students at Higher National Diploma Food Science and Technology and total number of 295 students at National Diploma Food Science and Technology.  Also, the department has graduated 40 students at National Diploma Nutrition and Dietetics and 8 students at Higher National Diploma Nutrition and Dietetics.  The Department has various production and analytical equipment which includes a standard bakery, spray drier and now a yoghurt plant among others.  The department at graduate level has mounted postgraduate diploma (PGD) in Food Science and Technology and has graduated two sets now.

            The Department of Science Laboratory Technology started its academic operations in 1979 with about 30 students enrolled into National Diploma Programme.  Over thirty two years of its continuous operation, the department has grown in size and scope of operations.

  1. National Diploma Programme
  2. Higher National Diploma Programme in

(a)        Biology/Microbiology Option

(b)        Chemistry/BioChemistry Option

©         Physics/Electronics Option

The Science Laboratory Technology programmes are designed to produce laboratory technologists that are capable of applying laboratory equipments and techniques in analytical, teaching and research work in schools, research institutes, hospitals and industry and are able to maintain such equipments.  The department has fully equipped laboratories for all options it offers.  There is also a well-equipped joint instrumentation laboratory that caters for research work in both the department of Science Laboratory Technology and Food Science and Technology.

 

The academic strength has grown from less than eight in 1979 to forty-five in 2013.  All options in the department are serviced by well trained and qualified staff.  Most of the academic staff have benefited from the staff development programme of the Polytechnic and have acquired higher degrees and industrial training necessary for the all round training of students.

The first three heads of departments listed above had at various times served the Polytechnic in the capacity of Deputy Rector.

The department has five buildings housing its laboratories, and the Electronic workshop.  It also has an animal house where rabbits and rats are bred for practical and research work.  The botanical garden is being reactivated and is expected to be functional by the end of the year.

The Biological Microbiology unit of the department offers diagnostic services which include inter-alia blood, urine, faecal and pregnancy tests.

The Chemistry/Biochemistry unit offers analytical services which include inter-alia soil, water, oil, simple and complex cations and anions.

The Physics/Electronics units are engaged in the servicing, repairs and general maintenance of equipments.  The unit also produces teaching aids for post primary schools in the country.

The Department of Nutrition and dietetics was established in 2012.  Nutrition and Dietetics started as a programme in the Department of Food Science and Technology in the year 2004 and now has been established as a department.

Goals and Objectives of the Department:

  1. To produce National Diploma graduates as assistant Nutritionist/Dietician capable of formulating and planning diets for all groups of people in hospitals, Schools, Catering Establishment Food Industries, Ministry and Social Welfare Agencies.
  2. To produce HND graduates that are Nutritionist/Dieticians capable of formulating and planning diets for all group of people in Hospitals, Schools, Catering, Establishments, Food Industries, Ministries and Social Welfare Agencies.
